Kylian Mbappe just got a Lionel Messi-shaped reason to beat the World Cup record

Kylian Mbappe will likely eclipse arguably the greatest player ever, Lionel Messi.

After scoring a brace against Senegal yesterday, Kylian Mbappe is now just two goals behind the World Cup record. This is currently a joint record held by Lionel Messi and Miroslav Klose, who are on 16. Messi's hat-trick against Algeria last night put him level with the German.

Messi is now 38, so this will likely be his last World Cup. Therefore, he does not have much time to add to his record. Mbappe is just 27, so he has time to set a World Cup scoring record that will be difficult for anyone to catch.

Mbappe already broke Olivier Giroud's goalscoring record for France last night. He now has 58 goals for Les Bleus. Giroud was gracious about having his record of 57 goals overtaken. The Lille striker said on the BBC, "Congrats, Kylian, you made it. I’m really happy for him. It was expected. I’m happy it's him.

"He will beat every single record anyway; caps, goals – he can easily reach 100 goals, and maybe Klose’s World Cup goals record. He has delivered great performances at World Cups and in big games."

Real Madrid fans will want to have their man with the World Cup record

Messi is now playing for Inter Miami, and he also had a spell alongside Mbappe for Paris Saint-Germain. However, he is synonymous with Barcelona. Due to the rivalry between Barca and Real Madrid, Los Blancos fans will want to see their player Mbappe have the World Cup goals record.

Real Madrid supporters will want to see Mbappe have a good World Cup, but probably not at the expense of Spain, especially those who are from the Spanish capital.

Most importantly, Los Blancos fans will be hoping that Mbappe stays fit. Real Madrid have now gone two seasons without winning any silverware. This is a massive drought for a club that expects to win the Champions League every season. In the last campaign for Real Madrid, Mbappe scored 42 goals in 44 games, which are astonishing numbers for a club that did not win anything.

Real Madrid is bringing in Jose Mourinho to bring back the glory days to the club. It will be interesting to see how Mbappe will work under Mourinho. The Portuguese manager is considered past the times and too defensive for modern soccer. However, there is no doubt that he is a winner. Perhaps Mbappe can be for Mourinho what Didier Drogba was for the manager when he was at Chelsea.
