Dean Huijsen refused to tell fans who he believes should win the Ballon d’Or, in a recent interview during the international break.
The two players who are not stopping at any point to make their claim about winning the Ballon d’Or next month are Lamine Yamal and Kylian Mbappe.
Yamal is Huijsen’s teammate at Barcelona, while Mbappe is a Real Madrid player and shares the locker room with him most weeks of the season.
When asked about his opinion on the Ballon d’Or, Huijsen gave a very diplomatic answer.
He said: “I am not going to choose. Any of my teammates deserves it, whether they’re from the national team or Real Madrid. There are many nominees.”

It is very clear what he is trying to do here. Refusing to put himself in this situation basically means that he does not want to choose a single player, because in both cases, it is a teammate of his who would have to be snubbed.
However, most of Real Madrid players, whenever asked, have said Mbappe’s name as they are clearly backing their Real Madrid teammate. Even some old players like Guti have said that they would rather see Mbappe win it than someone else.
Huijsen’s situation is a bit different because he shares a dressing room with both players. However, in the last year or so, Huijsen did not get called up for the national team at many points, including the World Cup, while he was alongside his Real Madrid teammates basically every week.
It is a difficult situation for him, and everyone knows it is a matter of choice and that it probably won’t have an impact on his relationship with either of the two, but Mbappe probably would have wanted Huijsen to say his name, just so that many more journalists get influenced because yet another player is technically casting his non-vote for him.
At the moment, it is just these two players who are campaigning for themselves in the Ballon d’Or race. Other players like Harry Kane, Michael Olise and many more are not really talking about the situation that much, so it will be interesting to see who gets the Ballon d’Or in October.
There are only a few days left for the voting to end, so the hope is that these two players finally stop talking about it and continue playing football and inspiring fans.
