Real Madrid and Liverpool are expected to be in some pretty hefty transfer competition this summer. Firstly, Liverpool are actually interested in signing Arda Guler from Real Madrid. Secondly, the two sides will compete for Leny Yoro. And now, another spanner has been thrown into the works, in the way of a Liverpool transfer target preferring Real Madrid.

According to a report from Calciomercato, Liverpool have made the first contact to sign Adrien Rabiot. The Frenchman is out of contract and therefore, he is without a club as things stand. Ageing at 29 years old, the French international will surely receive big interest from some top European clubs, as Liverpool and Newcastle United have already approached him.

However, Liverpool's approach was met with some unfortunate news for new manager Arne Slot. According to the Italian outlet, Adrien Rabiot already has his heart set on his next move and it does not involve Liverpool, but instead Real Madrid.

Whether or not Real Madrid want to sign Adrien Rabiot remains to be seen. This should not be misconstrued as Real Madrid being interested in signing Adrien Rabiot, as no moves have been made from Los Blancos as things stand. However, Rabiot's openness to join Real Madrid means that if they were to make a move, it would be fairly smooth-sailing to sign him.

Of course, there is a space in the squad for a new midfielder. From Real Madrid's perspective, they are still looking for a midfielder to come in and replace Toni Kroos. With a free agent like Rabiot who has great experience presenting itself to Real Madrid, this could prove to be a golden opportunity for Carlo Ancelotti.

From Liverpool's perspective, it would not be a massive loss to miss out on Adrien Rabiot. After all, they are stacked in the midfield department and pursuing Adrien Rabiot was more out of luxury rather than necessity. Still, Rabiot will open himself up to other moves if Real Madrid overlook him.
