Carlo Ancelotti has confirmed an exciting agreement struck by Real Madrid. Ultimately, it could impact the deal for Alphonso Davies.
Throughout the summer of 2024, Real Madrid were linked with a transfer for Alphonso Davies. In the end, no transfer agreement was reached with Bayern Munich, so the Canadian stayed put.
However, a common practice for Real Madrid over the last few years has been to sign players on pre-contract agreements. This means waiting for the player's contract to expire, signing him for free.
Alphonso Davies' current deal expires at Bayern Munich in 2025. So, logically, many believe Real Madrid will wait until then to sign him.
However, a recent announcement made by Carlo Ancelotti could have an impact on this deal.
Carlo Ancelotti confirms exciting agreement impacting Alphonso Davies
According to Fabrizio Romano, Ferland Mendy has signed a contract extension with Real Madrid. The contract extension was confirmed by Carlo Ancelotti and it sees Ferland Mendy put pen to paper over a new deal until 2027.
In his own words, Ancelotti said: “It’s all signed, yes . We’re very happy with Mendy.”
Ferland Mendy has played well this season. Including the UEFA Super Cup, he has already made six appearances this season. He is certainly the preferred option, with Fran Garcia providing sufficient backup.
That said, Real Madrid do not need to sign Alphonso Davies from Bayern Munich. They still can if Carlo Ancelotti deems it necessary but they have two great options at left-back already.
Unless Fran Garcia is sold, bringing in Alphonso Davies would simply be surplus to requirements. In many ways, it could hinder Real Madrid to have three egos battling for one spot.
Alternatively, tying Ferland Mendy down to a contract could be smart-play from Real Madrid, should they decide to sell him to facilitate Alphonso Davies' arrival. At this stage, nothing can be ruled out.
Either way, it is not in our interest to conspire Mendy's future. For now, he is a Real Madrid player and he is deserving of this contract extension. We only hope to see more improvement under Carlo Ancelotti. At this stage, it is going well.
