The Kylian Mbappe to Real Madrid saga has been going on for years now, since his days at AS Monaco. For one reason or the other, the club have never been successful when it comes to getting a deal done for the French World Cup winner. That could be set to change soon though, with his time at Paris Saint-Germain set to come to an end soon.
Mbappe has been at PSG since 2017. He has decided that he will be bringing an end to that chapter of his career next summer though.
As tweeted by Fabrizio Romano, Mbappe has now informed PSG president Nasser Al Khelaifi that he will leave the club as a free agent. The terms of the departure are yet to be fully agreed but he will leave Paris in the summer.
The news will not come as a surprise to those who have been paying attention for the past several months. This always felt like more of a matter of when than if. Now, it remains to be seen where Mbappe heads to next.
Mbappe takes one step closer to joining Real Madrid
Real Madrid are being considered as the heavy favourites to sign Mbappe as a free agent in the summer and understandably so. The Frenchman is believed to have grown up supporting Los Blancos.
Real Madrid are in a strong position as well. They know that they can win games without Mbappe. In fact, Carlo Ancelotti's side have lost only twice this season so far, both times against Atletico Madrid.
So, they do not need to go all out for Mbappe and could try to make it happen on their own terms. Premier League clubs could try to make a move as well but for the time being, the Spanish capital looks like the Frenchman's most likely destination.
