Many awards in sports are very objective. It is simple enough to understand that the players who perform the best and have the best output in terms of stats and numbers are normally the ones who take home some of the most prestigious honours. However, in recent years this has not necessarily been the case. And it could end up benefiting Real Madrid.
Lionel. Messi's recent The Best win has been a topic of discussion. While arguably the greatest in history, the Argentine was outperformed by many over the course of the year.
One player in particular who outperformed the Argentinian was Erling Haaland. The Norwegian had a historic season with Manchester City helping guide the team to a historic treble, only the second ever English side to achieve the feat.
Many in the footballing world are beginning to question what more Haaland needed to do to win The Best over Messi. And could it lead to him joining Real Madrid in the future?
Messi could inadvertently help Real Madrid sign superstar
As reported by AS, in Haaland's inner circle, there was a discussion about the need to “move to a club like Madrid” to gain even more spotlight. The potential need to don the royal white shirt for the Norwegian to reach a new dimension, not only in terms of sports but also in the media sphere.
Out of the last four players to win the Ballon d'Or, three were playing for Real Madrid at the time they won the award. The exception is Messi, who has won it eight times.
Haaland has been linked with a move to Real Madrid for years now, since his time at RB Salzburg. Could it finally transpire in the near future? Time shall tell. For now, he is a Manchester City player.
