Real Madrid are the La Liga and Champions League holders, and after adding Kylian Mbappe and Endrick to their ranks over the summer, they have to be considered favourites in both competitions once again. As for FC Barcelona, the Xavi era has come and gone. It had its moments but overall, nothing long-term. Once again, they find themselves looking at a rebuild, with Hansi Flick the man in the manager's office this time around.

One of the areas that both clubs need to strengthen is right-back. And it looks like they have a common transfer target in mind.

As reported by Fichajes, Barcelona have set their sights on Trent Alexander-Arnold. His contract with Liverpool expires in the summer of 2025, opening the door to a potential free transfer.

Of course, Liverpool would not want to see that happen. In recent years, we have seen many players run down their deals before heading to Spain. It is believed that the Reds are working on agreeing a contract extension with Trent in the near future.

Real Madrid have arguably the best right-back in the world, even at 32 years of age, in the form of Dani Carvajal. Having won the Champions League, La Liga and EUROs last season, he should be a contender for the next Ballon d'Or. But time and tide wait for nobody. Sooner or later, the club will need to find a replacement for the Spaniard. And a potential opportunity to sign a player of Trent's quality as a free agent does not come around often.

On the other hand, Barcelona's right-back situation has been an issue for them for many years now. We have seen players like Ronald Araujo and Jules Kounde fill in there but both of them are primarily considered centre-backs.

At the end of the day, it is Liverpool and Trent who hold all the cards. Let's see what transpires regarding the contract situation.
