Liverpool have been one of the best teams in Europe for many years now and are having a great campaign at the moment. Yet, they find themselves staring into an uncertain future. Jurgen Klopp has announced that he will be leaving the club after this season. And could that lead to Real Madrid signing one of the all-time best players?
Klopp has been the single most important factor in reestablishing Liverpool as one of Europe's best teams. For many years, they had struggled to compete on a consistent basis.
Of course, there were bright spots here and there. Like that miracle Champions League final win against AC Milan, or Luis Suarez almost guiding them to a Premier League title pretty much single-handedly.
It is under the management of Klopp though that they have consistently challenged for and won trophies, since the German's arrival in 2015. Naturally, with the German set to leave, questions are being raised around the future of some of their best players as well.
Real Madrid eye blockbuster move for Liverpool superstar
As reported by Defensa Central (via 90min), Real Madrid are prepared to pounce on the uncertainty surrounding Liverpool after Klopp's exit with a move for Virgil van Dijk. The Dutchman's contract is up in 2025.
Van Dijk is widely considered as the best centre-back of the modern era. He is also the Liverpool captain. Thus, him potentially leaving would be a major blow for the club.
Of course, it would be unlike Real Madrid to sign Van Dijk as well. The Dutchman is set to turn 33 years of age in the summer and rarely have Los Blancos signed veteran players in recent years, unless available on free transfers.
So, it would be a major surprise if Real Madrid end up signing Van Dijk. Never say never in football though.
