It does feel like we are well into the last few chapters of this long-running Kylian Mbappe to Real Madrid transfer saga. And as we approach the end, the Spanish club are still being viewed as the heavy favourites to win the race for the Frenchman's signature, whose current deal with PSG is set to run out in the summer.
We have been in this situation before. Unfortunately, Real Madrid did not come out on top that time around. So, until something official emerges, nothing should be taken for granted.
It does feel like Mbappe is on his way out of PSG. And in that scenario, Real Madrid would be his most likely destination. There does appear to be one final stumbling block though.
As reported by the Independent, Real Madrid are still negotiating a contract with Mbappe, and the two sides are no closer to an agreement on his wage package. It is now expected even at PSG that the French World Cup winner will go to the Santiago Bernabeu, but an agreement remains someway off. Los Blancos' offer so far hasn't been to the satisfaction of the player or his entourage.
Real Madrid face final Mbappe transfer problem
Mbappe is without a doubt one of the best players in the world. Some would argue the very best. But his options, when it comes to leaving PSG, might be very limited.
There are not many clubs in the world who would be able to, or would want to, match or improve the wages that he currently receives at PSG. The Premier League is the only other potential destination if he does not join Real Madrid but even that might be difficult to pull off.
So, it remains to be seen where the Mbappe saga goes from here. There have been plenty of conflicting rumours over the past few days. Something needs to happen soon.
