There are some players whose futures at Real Madrid remain in doubt despite the lack of depth in the current squad. The departure of some would not be a major problem for Los Blancos, as they have featured much in Carlo Ancelotti's team. But there is one player who has been a standout performer in recent times but could still be on his way out.
We are talking about none other than Andriy Lunin. He was one of the key reasons behind Real Madrid's Champions League and La Liga double last season.
When Thibaut Courtois suffered a serious injury before the 23/24 season had even started, Kepa Arrizabalaga was signed on loan from Chelsea to replace him. But it was Lunin who ended up establishing himself as the starting goalkeeper ahead of the Spaniard.
He justified his selection with a string of impressive performances, sometimes even proving to be the matchwinner. Yet, when Courtois returned to fitness towards the end of the season, he was straight back into the starting XI while Lunin found himself back on the bench even though he was the in-form player in goal.
Real Madrid could let in-form player go for bargain transfer fee
Considering how last season ended for Lunin on an individual level, it is not hard to see why he might be weighing up his options this summer. He is believed to have just a year left on his contract and if he was to leave in this window, one would expect top clubs to be interested.
It looks like he could be available for a bargain figure as well. As reported by The Athletic, for Lunin to leave, his agent Jorge Mendes would have to find a club able to make an offer of over €20 million.
In today's transfer market, that is an excellent transfer fee for a goalkeeper who has proven himself at the highest levels in the Champions League and a starter in a league-winning team. Let's see what the future holds for Lunin but it seems bright.
