Real Madrid have been handed a boost in their potential pursuit of Tottenham Hostpur defender Cristian Romero. The Argentine has been linked with the La Liga giants ahead of the summer transfer window.

Romero's name has been mentioned as one of several defensive options for Los Blancos this summer. David Alaba is leaving the club when his contract expires in June and Antonio Rudiger has yet to extend his deal which is also up at the end of the season.

The 27-year-old has endured a frustrating season with Spurs embroiled in a relegation battle. They sit one point above the drop zone and a mass exodus is expected this summer even if they stay up.

According to The Telegraph's Matt Law, Romero will be one of the high-profile departures that occur. The Lilywhites plan to sell him to allow a rebuild to take place.

The North London giants value Romero at £60m (€70m) and he has just over three years on his contract. The issue Real have is that Atletico Madrid are known admirers with Diego Simeone particularly a fan of his Argentine compatriot.

Spurs face Atleti in the Champions League this week and it's being described as a "potential audition" ahead of his summer exit. Los Blancos might also have a keen eye on him during that game as they look to strengthen their defense.

Romero is regarded as one of the Premier League's best defenders, but his temperament is a concern. He is hot-tempered and has cost Spurs with suspensions this season.

The 2022 World Cup winner does seem to have fans at the Bernabeu including Florentino Perez. A previous report suggested the Madrid president is pushing for him to be signed.

Romero has plenty of experience that could be hugely beneficial given Alaba is departing and Rudiger could also be headed for the exit door. He is a loud voice in the dressing room and could even stake a claim for a leadership role.

His teammate Micky van de Ven gave a glowing verdict on the Madrid target. He said (via Spurs-Web):

“For me, he is world-class. He is a leader. He is always one hundred per cent. He is a top-class player with the ball and without the ball when defending."

The Argentine isn't the only option for Los Blancos as they look to refresh their defense. Borussia Dortmund's Nico Schlotterbeck is also on the club's radar and it's suggested that the La Liga club are in pole position to sign the German.
