Given the way Gonzalo burst onto the scene this season, the decision to let him go leaves many scratching their heads. The striker burst onto the scene during this past summers FIFA Club World Cup, filling in for Kylian Mbappe, with the youngster going on to win the tournament golden boot with four goals, while also grabbing one assist. Gonzalo has made 22 appearances for Los Blancos this season, starting ten games, and has grabbed six goals and two assists across all competitions.
The Castilla product was a regular substitute under Xabi Alonso, getting a fair chance at minutes under the former manager, even grabbing a hat-trick against Real Betis on January 4th. However his situation has changed under Arbeloa. The striker hardly gets minutes not, getting on six minutes in Real's recent 1-1 draw with Girona when the team needed to score a winning, but Arbeloa didn't want to give him the chance to. Gonzalo hasn't featured in any of the clubs last three Champions League matchups, with his dwindling game time signaling the end of his time at the club.
Given his age and huge potential, Gonzalo won't be short of potential suitors once offers start coming in. The youngster was linked to a number of Premier League clubs last winter but a sale wasn't on the table then however with that now changing, the Premier League could well be his destination, with a move to the Bundesliga also being one that would make sense for a player his age hoping for regular gametime to develop.
As mentioned earlier his departure signals the clubs intentions to keep Endrick as part of the squad once the Brazilian returns from loan at the end of the season. Endrick has impressed massively grabbing 12 goal contributions in 16 games for the French team, with Los Blancos believing he will add more to the team than Gonzalo will. It's hard not to feel bad for Gonzalo, he's done nothing but produce for Real Madrid this season when given the opportunity and his payment is a sale rather than being given a bigger role which he has shown he is capable of carrying.
