There are very few rivalries, if any at all, that are as intense as the one shared by Real Madrid and Barcelona. These two clubs are inarguably the two best clubs in La Liga, and whenever they face each other, it is always an intense affair.
With that in mind, fans are excited and eagerly looking forward to Sunday, when Real Madrid and Barcelona meet in the Spanish Super Cup final, following Los Blancos' 2-1 victory over Atletico Madrid.
Xabi Alonso could win his first trophy with Madrid if they manage to hand Barca a defeat. However, what is even more interesting is that Los Blancos could also make history while doing so.
That is because the Catalans' boss Hansi Flick has not lost a single final in his managerial career. Most recently, he beat Madrid in the Copa del Rey final last season.
Real Madrid can make history vs Barcelona in Supercopa
It’s needless to say that Real Madrid will have to be at their absolute best when they face Barcelona to get the better of them. The Culers have been playing some impressive football lately, with players like Raphinha and Lamine Yamal on top of their form.
Meanwhile, Madrid received some good news on the injury front, with Kylian Mbappe looking increasingly likely to get minutes on Sunday. The Frenchman missed the matchup against Atletico Madrid due to a knee injury.
Mbappe has a great record against Barcelona. In fact, the French forward was also on the scoresheet for Real Madrid when the Merengues beat the Culers 2–1 this season in La Liga.
Nevertheless, Flick is known for holding a high defensive line, which Real Madrid successfully exploited last time around. Now, it remains to be seen if they can repeat the same.
Xabi Alonso, who is currently at a vital point in his Real Madrid managerial career, will have to get his tactics right. On the other hand, Vinicius Junior will have to pick himself up after a disappointing display against Atletico Madrid.
The Brazilian star was among the best players the last time Real Madrid played Barcelona, so fans are expecting a similar impact from the winger on Sunday as well.
Anyway, the stakes couldn’t be any higher for Real Madrid, and this matchup could be a defining moment for a number of their players, and also for Alonso.
We all certainly know what the Los Blancos players are capable of in big matchups. For now, fingers crossed, hoping the team brings home another trophy.
