Real Madrid are said to be planning to make the most of another of their clever transfer clauses. Los Blancos are already having a busy summer, snapping up Bernardo Silva and Marc Cucurella, and there is more business to come.
José Mourinho is going to be given a number of squad upgrades to aid the mission of trying to catch this dominant Barcelona side, and there is likely to be plenty of money spent as Florentino Perez looks to live up to his spending promises.
And a clever transfer clause could help fund that mission.
Real Madrid plan to exercise Paz option
Real Madrid raised eyebrows when they sold attacking midfield talent Nico Paz to Como for just €6million back in 2024. The cheap fee is one that many Los Blancos fans struggled to get over, and Paz's form since has only added to the questions, with the Argentine scoring 13 and assisting 8 to help Como to European qualification in the season just gone.
But very few Real Madrid sales take place without the insertion of a buy-back or sell-on clause, particularly when it involves young talents.
In Paz's case, there was a genius clause inserted, with Real Madrid agreeing a €10million buy-back clause. Fast-forward a couple of years from the move, and Paz is now said to be worth around €60million amid interest from the Premier League.
But Los Blancos still hold that buy-back clause, meaning they can sign him for €10million this summer and then decide what to do next. Reports claim Los Blancos are already eyeing a sale, meaning they could be in for a €50million profit on Paz, and that can be made up to €56million including the original fee.
The move certainly doesn't work out well for Como, who will make only €4million on their Paz investment, despite playing a key role in helping him become as highly-rated as he currently is.
But that is the nature of the beast when buying talented young players from Real Madrid, and Como have certainly benefited from having the Argentine in their ranks over the last couple of years.
Where Paz will end up next remains to be seen, but as things stand, it doesn't look like he will get much of a chance to impress Mourinho this summer, with an almost immediate departure being mooted. Though it's not impossible that the Argentine impresses during pre-season and changes minds in the capital.
