Real Madrid have set their sights on a transfer swoop for Reece James, despite the Chelsea defender's poor injury history.

Real Madrid are currently going through an injury crisis. They have a number of key players on the treatment table, with the backline being the most impacted position at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium.

Nevertheless, Real Madrid have remained stubborn so far in the January transfer window. At the halfway point of January, Real Madrid have not yet brought any new players into the Spanish capital.

This is despite several calls from the Real Madrid fans that a defender simply needs to be signed. Most notably, a right-back must be signed but ideally, a centre-back would also be brought in too.

Real Madrid consider transfer swoop for Chelsea defender Reece James

According to a report from AS, Real Madrid have now added Reece James to their transfer radar. However, as pointed out by AS, the club must ensure that James is able to play before signing him, considering his woeful injury record at a young age.

Nevertheless, Real Madrid's transfer preference remains Trent Alexander-Arnold. However, between now and the end of the season, Los Blancos are open to a loan move to bridge the gap.

This is because Trent is unlikely to sign for Real Madrid in the January transfer window. Therefore, Florentino Perez and co must consider a short-term option to fill the injury void. This is something the club are willing to do.

Alongside Reece James, Real Madrid are also considering a short-term return Alex Jimenez. He is a former Real Madrid youth player, currently playing for Milan.

Either way, no matter who Real Madrid sign, it's good that the current squad concerns are being addressed. After all, Real cannot go the remainder of the season without a first-team quality at right-back.
