For Real Madrid, the January transfer window is now over. With no signings made, can Carlo Ancelotti still compete this season?
For many clubs, there is still time in the January transfer window. Those who enjoy the drama of transfer deadline day still have the excitement ahead.
While the January transfer window is often quiet in comparison to the summer transfer window, it does sometimes provide some interest mid-season drama. It is more those clubs who have struggled in the first half of the season who anticipate the most transfer business.
While Real Madrid haven't necessarily struggled in the first half of this campaign, they know that relatively speaking, they could be doing better than they are.
Furthermore, with all the injuries in the squad, it is hard to imagine Carlo Ancelotti achieving much between now and the end of the campaign. Surely then, signings need to be made in the coming days.
Real Madrid controversially pull out of the January transfer window
However, Real Madrid fans are warned to expect nothing from Los Blancos. Indeed, the transfer proceedings have already concluded and no business will be made, as per Marca.
Here, I am addressing the potential incomings for Real Madrid. On that note, there will be zero unless, Real Madrid hear news of a player who wishes to leave the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium. Then, they will consider allowing the player to leave and if needed, a replacement could be pursued.
As it stands, though, no Real Madrid player has a transfer request pending. Surprisingly, even those who are struggling for game time would rather fight for their place in a royal white jersey than go out on loan.
There are players like Arda Guler and Endrick who, in my opinion, would benefit from a move away on loan. But then again, what do I know? If those young players wish to stay and fight for their place in the team, it is telling of their devotion and commitment to Real Madrid.
The decision for Real Madrid to withdraw themselves from the summer transfer window is hard to understand. I have never and will never doubt Florentino Perez (even given his frugality in recent windows) but I am rather frustrated by this decision.
There are no two ways about it; Real Madrid need bodies. Currently, a number of key players are on the treatment table and the defensive positions are impacted the most.
I understand the decision to wait until the summer transfer window for Trent Alexander-Arnold. Until the summer, Real Madrid should sign a short-term replacement. After all, Lucas Vazquez is the only recognised right-back as it stands.
