In the past few weeks there were rumors that Ferland Mendy was offered to AC Milan, who were after Fran Garcia. The Italian giants were looking to strengthen their left-back department after Theo Hernandez’s departure. They have already signed Brighton’s Pervis Estupinan for 22 million.
Ferlan Mendy missed 23 games through injury last term, and at 30 years old, Madrid believe now is the optimal time to offload him to ensure they receive a worthwhile fee. Especially after the arrival of Xabi Alonso, whose system Mendy doesn't find a place in.
Mendy’s contract at Real Madrid runs until 2028. The fact that his wages are high and he is an aging player has made it difficult for Xabi Alonso to move on from the player. However, Madrid can’t afford to have three players who expect to start at left back at the same time.
Ferland Mendy simply doesn't fit as a Real Madrid player anymore
Mendy only played 14 league games last season which is less than half. In 2025 alone he had two hamstring injuries. He also sustained three muscular injuries in 2024 and a leg injury.
His dwindling form and injury prone recent years are the exact reasons why it may be the right time for both he and Madrid to start getting ready to move on. And frankly, Madrid have moved on already.
The other criticism that has been laid at the feet of Mendy is his diminished contribution going forward. Mendy only registered one assist in last season’s La Liga season. The season before that he had no goals or assists in 23 appearances.
Madrid hope that 22-year-old Spanish full back Alvaro Carreras will take on the mantle and lead the role next season with Fran Garcia stepping in when needed. But first they need to settle the Mendy situation.
As was evident in his Leverkusen days, Alonso wants his full-backs to be highly involved in attack. Jeremie Frimpong and Alejandro Girmaldo were a big part of the success the Spanish managed to achieve in Germany. Under current circumstances, Mendy doesn't look like a player who will be able to do that.
A few days ago Mendy was working in the gym with the goal of returning to action on the season opener tie against Osasuna.
Despite Mendy's ambitions there is still uncertainty about his availabilty for the season. The full back has been away from action since April and also missed the Club World Cup.
At this point it looks like Real Madrid are waiting to be disappointed as recent reports suggest even Mendy doesn't know when he will be back to action.
