Real Madrid have been investing a good amount in defenders this summer, and that has come after a long while, so enjoy that. And honestly, they needed these signings more than in any other position.

After Dean Huijsen, another defender, Alvaro Carreras, has been brought to the Santiago Bernabeu, and this transfer has cleared up a lot of things.

A good left-back was long needed. Real Madrid were suffering perhaps the most in that position. Constant leakages and mistakes had become the norm, and no real beneficial output was seen from that side of the field.

Fran Garcia, too, could not impress much. What he did in the Club World Cup was an exception. He was good, but that was not the story of the entire season he played. But he is still not the biggest loser from this transfer.

The biggest loser from the Carreras deal is Real Madrid’s biggest liability

Let’s be honest. Ferland Mendy has become a big liability for Real Madrid. Constant injuries and absurd performances have marred the career he was once famed to build with Los Blancos.

Mendy is a good defender, no doubt about that, but Madrid need more than just that. Xabi Alonso needs more than just that. And Carreras is everything they are looking for. He can attack, he can run, and he can coordinate a great deal with the winger in playmaking, none of which Mendy could ever do.

It is an undeniable fact that Carreras will be the first-choice left-back for Xabi from the very beginning.

Fran Garcia’s sudden impression may earn him more minutes than what one might have thought earlier, but it is too big a bet to consider him giving a tough fight to Carreras for the starting spot.

And that is all. It is clear that Mendy will lose relevance, if he has not already. And it is only because of his own inabilities. It is clear as day, Ferland Mendy is the biggest loser coming out of this deal.
