If Real Madrid cruise past Paris Saint-Germain in the Club World Cup semifinal, they will face either Fluminense or Chelsea in the final, though the latter appear better positioned to win the tie.

Chelsea are shaping up to be one of the most exciting teams of the upcoming season. They seem to be signing every available player under the sun, and it will be fascinating to see how they manage such a bloated squad.

Their captain, Reece James, has been a loyal servant at Stamford Bridge for years. One of the most sought-after defenders in world football, he remains a force to be reckoned with.

In a recent fan interaction, via MadridXtra on X, James was asked about the toughest opponent he’s ever faced. His answer? “Vinicius Jr.”

Vinicius Jr. remains one of the most dangerous players in the world

By his own high standards, Vinicius had a relatively subpar season. He didn’t score as often, and he was largely quiet in several big games. His performances were underwhelming, but he seems to be finding his rhythm again.

Despite the dip in form, his position on the left wing remains untouchable. In fact, this is one of the main reasons Rodrygo finds himself without a guaranteed spot in the team.

The Brazilian wants to play on the left, but even a struggling Vinicius isn’t someone he can realistically replace.

I think there’s no better time than now to say this: Vinicius Jr. is primed for a breakout season under Xabi Alonso. Yes, it’s a bold call, but Alonso’s system looks tailor-made for Vinicius to thrive.

His improvement is already visible in the Club World Cup, and with more time under Alonso, his form is only going to get sharper.

If I’m to make a short-term prediction: Vinicius will be the standout player against PSG. And if Chelsea make it to the final, he’s going to haunt them too.

Reece James might want to lace his boots a little tighter.
