Real Madrid have already made huge efforts to support Jose Mourinho on the transfer market. Although Carlo Ancelotti had been begging for defensive upgrades, Mourinho has been the one to receive the full benefit of getting new defensive players who can help take Real Madrid back to the top after two straight seasons with no major trophies.
Mourinho wanted Denzel Dumfries from Inter Milan to play right back. He got him. He desperately wanted Marc Cucurella to start at left back. Real Madrid paid a hefty fee and promptly bought him from Chelsea. And he has also signed two more Premier League standouts in Bernardo Silva and Ibrahima Konate, both on free transfers.
Real Madrid and their new manager still want another top center back, though. Antonio Rudiger may not have much longer at the club, Eder Militao's injury situation is a perennial concern, and Dean Huijsen is not yet ready to start for the Merengues.
Real Madrid are going after real stars
According to a report from Diario AS, via the Madrid Zone, Real Madrid have set their final three man short list at the center back position for Jose Mourinho this summer. The three players are Borussia Dortmund star Nico Schlotterbeck, Inter Milan ace Alessandro Bastoni, and long time Manchester City standout Ruben Dias.
All three of them have the Mourinho seal of approval and are legitiamte world class center backs in the primes of their careers. They are all very different profiles and transfer situations, of course. Dias is a veteran leader and Premier League Player of the Season for a massive club that always competes with Real Madrid for Champions League trophies; he will be the toughest to sign.
Bastoni, likewise, will not be easy. Inter Milan have been to two recent Champions League Finals themselves and are easily the most complete club in Italian football. The sweet left footed center back has a unique skill set and will be expensive.
Meanwhile, Schlotterbeck is the cheapest option. The German international is an absolute stud and a Real Madrid coded player with his quality on the ball, physical tools, and passion for the game. Real Madrid were actually watching him a few years ago when he was leading underdogs Freiburg to Europe, and now that he is even better and with a club they love to do deals with, a transfer for Schlotty is an easy one, especially with a release clause under 60 million euros.
