Real Madrid have needed a center-back for the longest time. Even before Eder Militao's injury, Real Madrid should have signed a center-back as they only had, at the time, two centre-backs that they could rely on.

Raul Asencio was a brilliant addition, but that only came out of necessity. The insistence on starting Aurelien Tchouameni in that position also needed to stop, but they did not do it.

In some matches, they have paid the price. However, according to a new report, Real Madrid have turned their attention to a centre-back who is one of the very best in the business.

According to Matteo Maretto, Real Madrid are keen on signing William Saliba, and will do everything they can to make a concrete offer for him.

Signing William Saliba could be one of the final pieces of the puzzle for Real Madrid

The discussion about whether he joins the club or not is completely separate, but Real Madrid are, according to the report, very interested in signing the centre-back and building for the future.

If everyone is fit, Real Madrid have some really good centre-backs. Eder Militao, Antonio Rudiger, Asencio and David Alaba make for a good group of defenders, but Saliba is not only better than most of them, he is also younger than everyone on the list apart from Asencio.

Even if he was not better than everyone, it would not matter. He is young, and Rudiger is not. At some point, Real Madrid would need to sign a replacement for Rudiger, and there is not many better to go for in the market than Saliba.

However, one key detail in the report is that Arsenal are going to do everything to keep Saliba around for as long as possible. It is clear that the club thinks of him as the cornerstone of this new generation of brilliant players at the club based in North London.

Signing Saliba would be a really, really tough move for Real Madrid, but they are no strangers to superstar moves such as this one. They have signed so many good players in the past from the Saliba's very own national side, so it would not be the most shocking thing in the world if another one of that brilliant France side joins forces with the likes of Kylian Mbappe and Tchouameni at Real Madrid.
