Real Madrid had one of the busiest transfer windows in recent years this summer. They secured the signings of players like Dean Huijsen, Franco Mastantuono, and Alvaro Carreras.
Additionally, the Los Blancos also brought in Trent Alexander Arnold for free. Meanwhile, fans had to sadly bid goodbye to some of the Los Blancos legends, which include Luka Modric and Lucas Vazquez, with the veterans running out of contract this year.
Both of these players were part of Real Madrid’s three-peat Champions League winning squad and have etched their names in the club’s history.
Nevertheless, while Modric has already joined AC Milan some time back and has even made his official debut for the Serie A side, Vazquez, on the other hand, was left without a club. That, however, has changed recently.
Bayer Leverkusen have officially confirmed on their website that Vazquez has completed his move to the club. The Spaniard has joined the Bundesliga side on a free transfer, signing a contract that runs until 30 June 2027. He will wear the number 21 jersey for the club.
Lucas Vazquez has joined Bayer Leverkusen on a free transfer
Vazquez, who played a major role in the past campaign following the season-long injury to Dani Carvajal, made as many as 53 appearances in all competitions in the 2024-25 season while scoring two goals and providing eight assists.
That said, his performances saw a major drop in that period, and previous manager Carlo Ancelotti had to switch to Federico Valverde at the right-back position. Real Madrid have already strengthened that position with the addition of Trent Alexander Arnold to avoid facing a similar scenario in the future.
Vazquez, who is a Real Madrid academy product, has appeared in a total of 402 matches for Los Blancos and is one of the most highly decorated players in the club’s history, having won five Champions League trophies.
While he initially started as a right winger, the 34-year-old was shifted to a more defensive role under Zinedine Zidane. The Spaniard’s primary position at Leverkusen remains to be seen.
Nevertheless, it is always a heartbreaking moment to see any Real Madrid player join some other club, let alone a legend like Vazquez who played for the badge and showed up whenever called upon. Anyway, we wish the Spaniard all the best in this new chapter of his career.
