Real Madrid are used to breaking their own records. They have broken quite a few of them in recent years, but some of them are better left... unbroken.
Real Madrid have had a horrid season, and they have broken some bad ones as well. Despite the win over Mallorca on Wednesday, they broke yet another record they would not have wanted to at the start of this season.
This record is so bad that it would make any fan scratch their head about why Real Madrid did not sign defenders sooner, or why new Brazil manager Carlo Ancelotti did not fix this leaking defense sooner.
Real Madrid have matched their own record of the most goals conceded in a single season in the 21st century after conceding the lone goal to Mallorca on Wednesday. They have conceded 76 goals so far, which matches their record of 2002/03 and 2003/04. There is a likelihood that they surpass that number by the end of the season.
Real Madrid could have had it worse if it was not for Thibaut Courtois
If you ask me, that is abhorrent. Real Madrid have some of the best defenders in the world. Even if they got injured, it is the club's responsibility to bring in some new faces so that this problem does not arise again and again.
You also need to consider how many of them were avoided because of Thibaut Courtois' massive heroics. Remember the Clasicos, the games against Arsenal - they were all games where Real Madrid somehow could have conceded even more if it was not for Courtois.
Real Madrid needed to sign players after injuries to Dani Carvajal and Eder Militao. Both of these players were crucial to Real Madrid's set up, and even though it was not just the defenders' fault, some of the blame can be shared by Lucas Vazquez and other defenders.
There is also some blame over to Ancelotti, whose defensive structure has not been good since the end of last season. Real Madrid only conceded 53 goals last season, 23 less than this season with more matches played.
It is something to be mad about, and the blame is not on one single person. It is not just on the defenders on the pitch. Not just on Ancelotti. Not just on the club. It is an accumulation, and it needs fixing next season when Xabi Alonso comes in.
