Real Madrid have been really active in squad planning for this season. They understood that there were a lot of deficiencies in the squad from last season and have since been able to work on them pretty impressively in the last few weeks.
They have already closed the signings of players like Denzel Dumfries, Marc Cucurella, Ibrahima Konaté, Bernardo Silva, and Carlos Espi, all of whom were desperately needed profiles at the club. Marc Cucurella was a left-back that was very defensively sound and would help with the team's balance, with Trent Alexander-Arnold on the other side.
Denzel Dumfries acts as a really good backup for Trent. Ibrahima Konaté acts as a good pickup for the centre-back position, and Bernardo Silva would be a great addition to the midfield in terms of technicality, work rate, leadership, and a high IQ. Carlos Espi is a great back-up option at striker.
But this doesn't mean Real Madrid are done. They are still closing the signing of winger Yan Diomande from RB Leipzig, which will be another brilliant coup for the club. They're still trying for Rodri, who is perhaps the most important signing they could make between now and the end of the season.
Real Madrid could massively improve with Aymeric Laporte as one of the options at CB
Apart from these players, they should also look at another position that they need reinforcements in, and that is the centre-back spot. Konaté simply wasn't enough, and Real Madrid need another centre-back to start the season.
That centre-back should definitely be Aymeric Laporte. They have not been looking at him. There haven't been that many reports about Laporte being an option for Real Madrid, but he should be.
Real Madrid have been looking at some other centre-backs like Nico Schlotterbeck, but they are unattainable now because of his long-term injury. Alessandro Bastoni doesn't really fit the style of play that Mourinho would want to play at Real Madrid, and would be too expensive and not worth the money, which is why Aymeric Laporte would be the perfect option.
He is a brilliant passer of the ball. He is defensively really good. His injury record has only improved in the last few years. He's a good leader on and off the pitch. He has experience of winning the biggest titles, most notably the World Cup just a couple of weeks ago, and is generally one of the most underrated centre-backs in the game.
He is not the youngest player Real Madrid will sign, but guess what? Real Madrid do not really need any more young players. They need players with experience, with leadership qualities that have been desperately lacking from the team for the last two years.
Signing Laporte would be a brilliant piece of business for the club. Obviously, that would mean a centre-back actually leaves the club before the end of the season. One of the centre-backs who had been linked with a move, or at least has been shown the exit door at Real Madrid, according to reports, is Raúl Asencio. It's really important that that sale happens for this signing to take place as well. Obviously, the injury has made it difficult, but it is not impossible.
Real Madrid need players like Laporte. That has been proven in the past, and they still need a centre-back because of Éder Militão's really bad injury record in the last few years.
Laporte is the choice to go for despite him being on the wrong side of 30, and the club needs to realise this sooner rather than later, or else they'll be making the same mistake that they almost made with Rodri.
