On paper, Real Madrid have arguably the strongest squad in all of Europe. The squad is filled with world class talent from the defence all the way to the attack, making it one of the most formidable squads in the world.

The club has a knack for building a perfectly balanced squad of both seasoned veterans as well as newer, younger players.

However, even with the sheer amount of talent in the squad, Real Madrid have struggled to play with much consistency this season. The performances have been all over the place from players who had fantastic seasons last year and were expected to be standout players once again this year.

One of the most obvious places Real Madrid has struggled this season is in the midfield. After the retirement of Toni Kroos, the midfield has noticeably struggled without him.

Players like Fede Valverde and Aurelien Tchouameni were expected to fill the shoes left by the German but those have proven to be too big for some of the best midfielders in Europe.

With the midfield struggling this season, Real Madrid are assessing their options in the transfer market, and the club seem to have their eyes on a fellow La Liga midfielder.

Real Madrid pushing to sign Liverpool and Man City target

As being reported by AS, Real Madrid have Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi on their transfer radar as a possible signing as the club looks to strengthen their midfield following the retirement of Toni Kroos.

Zubimendi has emerged as a key player for Sociedad in the past few season, becoming one of the most reliable and consistent midfielders in La Liga.

His calmness on the ball and ability to control the tempo of the play has caught the eyes of a number of to clubs in Europe, including Real Madrid.

The midfielder has a very similar profile to Toni Kroos which is exactly what the club are looking for in the transfer market.

The Spaniard has a release clause of €60 million, which makes him a somewhat costly yet still attractive midfield option for Real Madrid.

If the club hopes to sign Zubimendi they will have to put up with competition from clubs like Liverpool, who were close to signing him this past summer, as well as Manchester City who have recently joined the race to secure the signature of the Spanish midfield maestro.
