Another winter transfer window has passed by and Real Madrid have once again decided to refrain from bringing in a new player. This is despite the fact that the Los Blancos’ lack of depth in the squad is clearly visible through their performances, which have not been convincing.
For starters, Real are already out of the Copa del Rey and have also failed to lift the Spanish Super Cup after losing to their rivals, Barcelona. Additionally, Los Merengues will have to play two more Champions League matches to qualify for the round of 16 after their disappointing loss to Benfica in the final group-stage match, dropping them to ninth.
So newly appointed manager Alvaro Arbeloa clearly has a lot on his plate at the moment, and some fresh new arrivals would have certainly helped him in the process.
Meanwhile, reports have emerged that Real had the opportunity to finalise more than one signing during the winter transfer window. In fact, The Athletic FC journalist Mario Cortegana has recently revealed that in January Real rejected multiple approaches from various players’ agents.
This is due to the fact that senior figures at Real’s board feel confident that the squad is strong enough to compete for all the remaining trophies this season.
Real Madrid’s overconfidence during the winter transfer window could cost them dearly
With the most important part of the campaign yet to approach, Real might have made a huge mistake that could result in them going trophyless in back to back seasons.
Notably, Jude Bellingham will be unavailable for about a month due to the injury he picked up recently. So the crisis in midfield is only going to worsen. At a time like this, the decision from the Real board seems even more baffling, to be honest.
Los Blancos fans have already let their dissatisfaction known through jeers and boos during recent matches at Estadio Bernabeu. Although most of them are directed towards the players, the management also has its fair share.
While it’s understandable that the club might be waiting for better options to be available in the market in the summer, signing a proven veteran like Ruben Neves, who was reportedly keen to join Real in the winter, wouldn’t have hurt anyone.
Nevertheless, every Real fan wants to see their club win more trophies, but the situation isn’t ideal. Then again, Los Blancos have managed to beat even greater odds before, so there’s still some hope. That said, the current players will have to take the initiative and perform at their very best if they wish to win some silverware this season.
