According to reports, Barcelona are pushing to sign Rodri despite the player being interested in joining Real Madrid initially - so much so that the club from Catalonia is leading the race
Many reports coming out on Thursday morning claimed that Real Madrid cannot sign Rodri if they don't sell anyone, and their plan to sell Eduardo Camavinga or Raul Asencio has not worked out the way they wanted. Some also claimed that Barcelona players had started talking to Rodri, and he had started thinking about a move to Barcelona.
This means, with the recent signing of Yan Diomande, Real Madrid do not have a single spot in the squad available to bring Rodri in.
Even that does not matter at the moment - after having such a long time where Rodri prioritised Real Madrid over any other move, the club elongated the saga enough to allegedly fall behind their biggest rivals in the deal for a player who is required more than anyone else at the moment.
Real Madrid's biggest mistake to prioritise Yan Diomande over Rodri
If you asked me about the players Real Madrid have signed this summer, Rodri would have been the first signing I would have made. We are talking about an issue that has been going on for two years. No controller or anyone to direct the tempo since Toni Kroos retired, and Real Madrid got the best opportunity to sign the next best available player in that sense, and yet, nothing has happened.
Reliable journalists are talking about squad space and all, but this is a signing that Real Madrid needed before yet another attacker. Diomande could've been a good luxury signing to have - and he would obviously help the club far more than any unnatural right winger - but Rodri is what the club desperately needs.
If you have a choice between registering him or Diomande, you go for the player who will guarantee you a higher floor and success. Then, you figure out how to incorporate Diomande - who would also be an important signing.
If this Rodri deal fails, it will be a case of the classic Florentino Perez problem that got him to resign in the first place, a couple of decades ago - prioritising a luxury attacker over a player who is literally the final piece of the puzzle, just because he is a bigger number.
The worst part is this signing was done. It would have been done if Real Madrid acted quick enough. It still might finish well for them, but the chances of that happening are lower than they ever were. And their biggest rival might just sweep their most needed signing from under their noses. Embarrassing.
