Real Madrid take big contract decision on David Alaba’s future

Real Madrid are assembling some of the finest talents in football and building a squad that they would trust to dominate Europe for the next decade. The dream is to build the strongest young team that owns the European crown for years and years to come.

For that, some of the best names are being signed. Dean Huijsen, 20, is done. Franco Mastantuono, 17, is sealed. Arda Guler, 20, is shining bright. Endrick, 18, is learning and developing faster than ever.

The idea is pretty clear here. But to keep it alive, Madrid must ensure that they keep letting the deadwood go. The players that are old, the players who are not at the top of their game now, the players who cost Madrid more than they benefit, all of these must go.

And one name in the current squad perfectly fits all these conditions: David Alaba. The Austrian has become a big liability for Los Blancos. He has been the most dubious defender ever since his injury and is not expected to return to his peak anymore.

Further, his salary hurts Real Madrid a lot. He is one of the top earners in the team and provides nothing but a few kit photoshoots to justify that. Alaba may have been a legend of the game at his time, but that time is past. Now is the time to move on.

Real Madrid have decided not to offer a renewal to David Alaba

According to Diario AS, Los Blancos have made the decision on the future of Alaba and they are clear with the idea that they are not going to offer the centre-back a renewal offer after his contract expires in 2026.

Alaba is 33 and on a fast-paced decline. There does not appear to be, in near sight, any opportunity for a revival. Now that Madrid have secured the signing of Dean Huijsen and that Raul Asencio has become a key part of the starting XI despite his occasional woes, Alaba is no longer needed.

Right now, Alaba intends to honour his contract with Madrid and not leave before it expires. I highly doubt any top team would be willing to sign him anyway.

As things stand, Real Madrid are going to let Alaba see out his contract until 2026 and then depart as a free agent.
