Jose Mourinho's controversial comments about Vinicius Junior shocked the football world after the Real Madrid star accused Gianluca Prestianni of racism. The Brazilian was visibly upset by an insult made by the Benfica winger during last week's Champions League play-off first-leg.
Prestianni covered his mouth with his shirt before insulting Vinicius. The Madrid man ran over to the referee and informed him what was said.
Vinicius alleged that the Argentine called him a "monkey" and this resulted in UEFA's racism protocol being invoked. During the drama, Vinicius was involved in an exchange with Mourinho on the touchline before Kylian Mbappe interrupted.
Mourinho refused to take sides after the game but suggested Vinicius provoked the fans his players with his celebrations. The Brazilian danced in the corner flag in celebration after scoring the winner at the Estadio da Luz.
Prestianni has since refuted Vinicius' allegations. UEFA are conducting an investigation into the incident and as a result the player is banned from tonight's second-leg at the Bernabeu.
Mourinho might think twice
Mourinho has refused to speak to the media amid the backlash he received for criticising Vinicius. He had also suggested Benfica can't be racist because their club legend is black Portuguese icon Eusebio.
Benfica winger Dodi Lukekabio has given his thoughts on the situation and where he stands. He said (via Pickx Sports):
"It's true that people talk and speculate, but in the end, we don't know what was really said. Is it true or was it an exaggeration to take advantage of the situation? I think it's also possible that Real Madrid wanted to capitalize on this."
Lukekabio added:
"The only thing I hope is that what was said is false. Because, if it's true, I cannot accept it. I'm against injustices. And any injustice deserves to face the consequences."
This should serve as an example for Mourinho on how to address racism and the allegations made by Vinicius. To suggest the Brazilian's actions were an issue is ridiculous and he forgets the years spent riling up opposition fans, players and managers.
Vinicius is set to start tonight's encounter with Benfica and Mourinho won't be on the touchline. He was sent off in the first leg and will have to watch the game from the stands.
Madrid are 1-0 up thanks to Vinicius' impressive goal in Portugal last week. They won't have Kylian Mbappe available after the French forward sustained a knee injury.
