Real Madrid have been told by a former Spain pthat there chances of signing Manchester City midfielder Rodri are slim. Los Blancos have been linked with the Spanish midfielder amid speculation growing over Pep Guardiola's future at the Etihad.
Gaizka Mendieta has given his verdict on Madrid managing to lure Rodri to the Santiago Bernabeu. The legendary former midfielder was linked with a move to the La Liga giants during his playing career but never arrived at the club.
Rodri hasn't been at his best this season after returning from a lengthy spell on the sidelines. He still remains one of Europe's most highly-rated defensive midfielders after winning the Ballon d'Or in 2024.
Mendieta on Madrid's hopes of signing Rodri
Rodri's father added fuel to the flames last week about the possibility of his son leaving City. He couldn't be sure what the future holds for 29-year-old.
Mendieta thinks a move to the Bernabeu probably isn't the on the cards. He told BetBrothers (via GOAL):
"When he does leave Man City I could see it being an agreement with the club, there is also a big connection there with Barcelona. There was Txiki Begiristain there and of course Pep Guardiola, but it would still be up to Rodri personally. I still think it would be hard for him to join Real Madrid."
Rodri has appeared 21 times across competitions this season, posting one goal. His form has been somewhat of a concern given the high standards he set himself during his peak with the Cityzens.
The Spain international has won every major trophy on offer at the Etihad. His future is the subject of speculation amid talk of Guardiola ending his reign with the Premier League club.
There has been no suggestion that Barcelona are targeting Rodri despite Mendieta's comments. The Catalans have other pressing matters such as replacing Robert Lewandowski who is in the twilight years of his career.
Real Madrid should snub Rodri
Rodri is just one of many European midfielders on Madrid's wishlist ahead of the summer transfer window. He is undoubtedly the most high-profile name given his success during his career.
That said, the Spaniard hasn't managed to bounce back fully from an ACL injury. A move for the Euro 2024 winner should only occur at a reasonable price.
A move for PSG's Vitinha feels the best option for Madrid if they truly want to overhaul their midfield this summer. The Portuguese has been a key man in Luis Enrique's Parisians' side and could be a long-term solution.
