When all the add ons of the deal are tallied up and the transfer is made official, Yan Diomande, at 140 million euros from RB Leipzpig, will be the most expensive player in the history of Real Madrid. Not even Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale, Jude Bellingham, or the bust Eden Hazard will have cost more than Diomande, and even adjusting for inflation, he still ranks among them as one of the top five most expensive transfers in Madrid history.
That is insane company to be in, but Diomande is also less proven than any of those players. Cristiano was already the best player in the world before he moved to Madrid, and Hazard and Bale were also the best players in the Premier League at the time of their transfers. Meanwhile, Bellingham was the best in the Bundesliga.
Diomande may not have been the best, but he wasn't far off from Harry Kane and Michael Olise when you adjust for the fact that he had to carry an RB Leipzig side that was the weakest talent wise in years. And he had 20 goal contributions while being the best dribbler, yes even above Olise, in the entire Bundesliga.
Yan Diomande has to prove himself to Madridistas
Real Madrid usually spend 50 million euros or so on superstars of the future, but there is something about Diomande that makes Jose Mourinho and Florentino Perez think he is worth spending well over half of what Michael Olise would go for from Bayern Munich in 2027 or another summer window.
The thing is, Yan Diomande was wanted by Liverpool and PSG badly; they just were not willing to give RB Leipzig the money that they needed to in order to seal the deal. That said, the price tag does Diomande no favors in terms of matching the pressure that already exists on any player at the Santiago Bernabeu, no matter the fee.
Because Diomande's move comes at the same time that Real Madrid are going to miss out on World Cup Golden Ball winner Rodri, widely seen as the world's finest No. 6, to Barcelona. Rodri is a much more established name, a Ballon d'Or winner, a European Champion and World Cup winner, and fills a much more pressing position of need given how much Real Madrid have struggled for control in the middle since Toni Kroos's retirement after the 2023/24 Champions League title triumph.
Real Madrid spending big on Diomande but not coughing up the extra 25 million euros to secure Rodri over Barcelona from Manchester City will loom large, and the pressure Diomande faces as a result of that is almost insurmountable. Almost.
