It's safe to say that referees aren't perfect. They're human beings at the end of the day and they make mistakes and can be inconsistent from game to game which is expected, however sometimes these inconsistencies have major consequences to games and teams.

Hence, VAR was introduced. Introduced in La Liga in the 2018/19 season, VAR has changed the game for good or for bad depending on who you ask.

While it has helped to correct mistakes that officials on the field may have missed, it has also not corrected clear mistakes and in some cases dragging on games with long reviews.

VAR isn't perfect by any means, and many fans have made suggestions on how it can be improved going forward, and it seems the Spanish Football Federation is taking a step which could change how VAR is used going forward.

Spanish football to test rule change in third division which Real Madrid fans will love

As being reported by COPE, a new rule will be introduced in the Spanish football third division this season, which allows coaches to be able to request VAR intervention.

According to the rule, each coach will have two requests per match, and if the request is correct, both requests will be kept.

For anyone familiar, this rule is almost identical to the challenge rule in American football in the NFL, where both coaches get two challenges per game and if they win their challenge, they retain both.

Depending on who you ask this rule change could be seen as both a positive and a negative. On the positive side, many other major sports allow coaches the fair chance to challenge questionable calls, so there's no reason why football couldn't do the same.

However, on the negative side, the requests for review could make games drag on even longer and could tactically be used to disrupt play.

Whether or not this rule will make its way all the way to La Liga remains to be seen, but in the case of Real Madrid, it would not be surprising if the club backs the rule change given the amount of incorrect calls in the recent season that have cost Real Madrid major results.
