Spanish left-back Álvaro Carreras has reportedly slammed the door shut on signing for one of the top clubs in Spain. He is happy at Benfica.

For obvious reasons, it is within Barcelona and Real Madrid's best interest to keep Spain's top talents in their own possession. For this reason, they always keep a keen eye on both their La Liga competitors and any clubs abroad who may be fostering fine Spanish talent.

One of those clubs, without a doubt, is Benfica. The Portuguese side were involved in the best Champions League game of the season so far, in that dramatic display against Barcelona.

From Real Madrid's perspective, it didn't end the way they would've liked as Barcelona snatched a late winner in that game. However, Real Madrid were treated to a good viewing from a potential transfer target.

In the match, Álvaro Carreras played with plenty of maturity, despite giving way in big moments. For the majority of the game, he was assured and dealt with Raphinha and Lamine Yamal well.

Speaking after the match, tough, Carreras was asked about potential interest in Spain, the country he was born. To which, Carreras replied that he was only focused on Benfica. He refused to rule out a move long-term but for the short-term, he has seemingly closed the door on Barcelona and Real Madrid.

In his own words, Carreras said: “Going back to Spain? We never know, but I have a contract for many years here at Benfica, I am happy. They gave me the opportunity to grow and I owe them everything."

Thankfully, the left-back position is not one of immediate concern to Real Madrid. They are best-placed to focus on centre-back signings and right-back signings before they turn their attention to left-back.
