Real Madrid have finally offered Antonio Rudiger a contract extension, reports Jose Felix Diaz of MARCA.
The two parties have been involved in a stalemate for the past few months, with the club choosing to wait and see what level Rudiger is able to show this season, as they do with any player past the age of 30.
Clearly, Rudiger's level has been high enough for the club to consider keeping him around for at least another year.
Real Madrid have now decided that they want to keep him around for another year, according to the journalist, and they look to have finally cleared out the last hurdle preventing an extension from happening.
The last hurdle to Real Madrid keeping Antonio Rudiger has been cleared
Rudiger wanted a two-year extension, according to the reporter, but the club has decided to only offer him a year's extension, as they do with most of their players.
However, they think that the player will accept their offer, despite it being a year less than what the German was reportedly hoping for.
It is a good deal for all parties involved, for many reasons. For Rudiger, it is really important to have at least one more year at the club to see how high his level can remain at after the World Cup.
It will also be crucial for Real Madrid to keep him around after the World Cup because of the number of injuries that can take place in these sorts of seasons.
It is important to keep as many players as possible, because even four central defenders - which is what Real Madrid will have unless they sign someone next season - can sometimes be too few.
They might need to sign another central defender either way purely because of Eder Militao's consistent injury issues as well as Rudiger's age.
That is one position where Real Madrid definitely have to keep as many players as possible, because the current group of players together has not really worked, and past years have shown just how important depth in this position really is.
Rudiger's individual level will still be high enough to at least be a good leader in the dressing room and play a few games. Dean Huijsen has not really impressed the way everyone thought he would, and even if he is able to be more consistent next season, Rudiger's services will still be needed because of the amount of games Real Madrid play every single year.
