Real Madrid are well and truly in their transitional phase when it comes to the age of the squad. Many of the older veteran players of the old generation are making way for the newer, younger up-and-coming generation of players who are expected to lead the club to copious amounts of success in the future.
Players like Karim Benzema, Nacho and Toni Kroos have all departed the club in the last few years whether that be for new changes at different clubs or hanging up their boots and retiring. This has opened the door for younger players like Aurelien Tchouameni and Raul Asencio to step up and find their place in the starting lineup.
However there are some older players who have survived this changing of the guard and proven that even though father time is slowly but surely catching up with them, they still have a purpose in the squad. Players like Danic Carvajal and Luka Modric are some of the few who have kept pace with the younger generation and still prove to be key players in the squad.
That being said, their time at the club is bound to come to an end sooner rather than later, and for one of them their time at the club could come to an end this summer. But should it?
No one at Real Madrid has what Luka Modric does
Real Madrid veteran and club captain Luka Modric is out of contract at the end of the season and there is still much speculation surrounding his future with Los Blancos.
The Croatian is the oldest player in the squad at 39 years old, but he has proven that age is just a number, with the midfielder ageing like fine wine. Modric has put in a number of top class performances this season and has brought a sense of calmness to the midfield in times of chaos during matches, which has proven to be helpful for the younger midfielders.
As mentioned earlier, Modric is out of contract this summer and whether or not he will continue his stay at the club remains unknown. From the club's perspective, it would be in their best interest to extend the veteran for one more year as he has proven he still has what it takes to play at the top level and has come in handy during the injury-plagued times at Real Madrid. Modric has also shown through reports and what he has said publicly that he wants to retire at Real Madrid, so that is also another reason to keep him at the club for another season.
