There's nothing more to say about Real Madrid's collective failure in the Champions League. It has been clearly known that the methods were ineffective, and the prospect of a comeback was merely a pipe dream for the players and management.
There was no real strategy, and I'm tired of thinking about the club's imprudent approach to the world's finest club tournament.
The players were terrible. They didn't present any characters, which is odd given all the buzz they'd created on social media prior to the game.
The defense was terrible and misleading. The midfield was not what you wanted to see on a Champions League knockout night when you were behind by three goals. And about the attack, I'd rather not say too much. It was horrible. Very horrible. That is all.
Except for one, all of the players were incredibly shoddy and shared responsibility for the defeat.
There is only one Real Madrid player who does not have to share the blame of defeat
The squad was terrible, but one individual wasn't. He had little influence over the outcome of the game and tried all in his power to prevent it.
Thibaut Courtois is the only Real Madrid player who is not to blame for the team's defeat against Arsenal. If not for him, the margin of goals in each leg would have easily exceeded 5.
Despite suffering from persistent discomfort and injuries this season, the Belgian goalkeeper remains highly depended on and continues to produce the most.
His performance versus Arsenal was good. A spectacular penalty save in the opening few minutes prevented the scoreline from deteriorating further and would ordinarily have provided a significant morale boost to any other side, but nothing occurred with Real Madrid. The very next second, they resorted to their old methods of mediocrity, and let me be clear: this was nothing short of an insult to Courtois himself.
He has been the lone wolf in both legs, doing everything he could to spare the squad from any disgrace, but his comrades repeatedly failed him down. If there is one player who can hold his head up after defeat, it is him alone.
