Valencia vs Real Madrid match preview
Real Madrid's results since the last international break have been flawless, so will their perfect five week period continue, ahead of the upcoming window? On Wednesday evening, los Blancos fought back from behind twice to beat AEK Athens 3-2 in the Champions League. Both Jude Bellingham and then Kylian Mbappé equalised at Agia Sophia Stadium, before Fede Valverde's late rocket snatched victory in Greece.
José Mourinho's team are now one of only two clubs to boast maximum points in the Champions League, alongside holders Paris Saint-Germain. Meantime, in La Liga, this is a pivotal weekend in the title race. Since defeat in the Madrid derby, Real Madrid have won four successive matches, including swatting aside Racing Santander 3-0 last Sunday; all the goals at El Sardinero coming in the first half.
Real Madrid are currently third, one point behind Atlético and three adrift Barcelona, who they beat at Camp Nou a fortnight ago. However, Atleti and Barça face each-other on Sunday so, irrespective of what happens at the Metropolitano, a victory here will propel Real Madrid even further back into the title race.
This, traditionally, is one of the toughest fixtures on the calendar for any Spanish side, but that may well not be the case anymore. That is because, Valencia currently sit second bottom of the table, in serious danger of dropping into the Segunda División for the first time in four decades.
Carlos Corberán was sacked as head coach in September, replaced by the vastly experienced Javier Aguirre. The Mexican claimed his first win as Valencia boss last Sunday, with Umar Sadiq the only scorer against neighbours Elche at Estadio Martínez Valero.
Los Murciélagos still only have a miserly nine points after 11 outings, their other victory coming against Alavés at Mendizorrotza. In front of their own fans, Valencia have picked up just two points from six games, both coming from goalless draws, annihilated 5-0 when Barcelona visited early in the campaign. Well, a similar scoreline feels more likely than an upset on Saturday night.
Valencia team news
Having scored the winner off the bench a week ago, Umar Sadiq will be hoping to lead the line this time, with Javier Aguirre potentially moving Arnaut Danjuma out-wide. Liverpool loanee Harvey Elliott can return, having served his one-match ban, albeit is likely to be a substitute.
Real Madrid team news

Vinícius Júnior, who started in Athens on Wednesday, is serving the final match of his four-game domestic ban. Neither Arda Güler nor Aurélien Tchouaméni traveled to Greece in mid-week, José Mourinho deciding that the pair needed a rest, so expect both to be raring to go here.
In defence, Wednesday saw Éder Militão start for the first time since 30 November last year due to a hamstring injury, deployed alongside Antonio Rüdiger, with Ibrahima Konaté and Dean Huijsen forecast to come back in. Lastly, Kylian Mbappé scored three times against Valencia last season, likely to add to that tally here.
Predicted Line-ups
- Valencia predicted lineup: Dimitrievski; Martínez, Pepelu, Tárrega, Gayà; Rodríguez, Ugrinić, Guerra, Danjuma, Rioja; Sadiq.
- Real Madrid predicted lineup: Courtois; Valverde, Konaté, Huijsen, Cucurella; Tchouaméni, Silva, Bellingham; Güler, Diomandé, Mbappé.
- Score prediction: Valencia 1-3 Real Madrid.
