Former Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric fully believes Real Madrid can still challenge for all trophies this season. Real Madrid have had a horrible start to the league campaign, losing two games already to Real Betis and Athletic Madrid.
Those losses mean that now Real Madrid are six points behind Barcelona, and it is not looking great for anyone associated with the club.
However, Modric believes that it is only the start, and Real Madrid will be able to compete with Barcelona for the league as well as in other competitions.
He said, "Real Madrid are struggling, but it is only the start. I see Madrid, with Mourinho, as a fantastic team ready to compete for all titles this year. There is no need to worry or think that everything is over because Barcelona is leading by six points. This team is totally capable of closing the gap and winning the league."
Real Madrid are still fully capable of winning trophies this season, but it will demand big decisions from Mourinho
That is technically correct, even though Real Madrid have never successfully won the league after being six points behind Barcelona at any point in the season. It is still only October, and there will be plenty of chances for Real Madrid to gain the advantage on Barcelona. They've still yet to play each other in the two Clasicos of the league campaign, and even though Barcelona look absolutely unbeatable, there will still be a chance for Real Madrid to beat them when the time comes.
Mourinho has had around three weeks to get a lot of things to consider, and hopefully he has used all this time to make sure that he has a team ready to go for the league and the Champions League. After the break, there are so many issues that Real Madrid need fixing this season. They wouldn't really change unless Mourinho actually thinks about some of them and starts benching some of the players that he has in the starting eleven.
It is a lot easier said than done because it is a big club, and there are big decisions to be made. There are big egos, too, in the squad, but that is exactly why Mourinho was brought in. He was brought in to bypass all of that and make the decisions that would lead to the improvement of the team, regardless of any player who is on the bench.
It remains to be seen whether Mourinho makes those decisions or not, or whether Modric is right with his prediction, but technically, it is true. The league may be already difficult to win, but it is far from over. There are so many games left in the season, and if Real Madrid are able to get a consistent streak going and are able to beat Barcelona, who knows what could happen?
