Real Madrid have made a lot of signings this summer, and reports suggest there may be more to come. For the first time in years, Los Blancos have invested heavily in defenders, a much-needed move considering the wave of injuries that has plagued the squad in recent seasons.

According to Marca, Real Madrid left-back Ferland Mendy, who underwent surgery in April for a ruptured tendon, is still recovering and is not expected to be ready for the start of La Liga in August or the Champions League in September.

Mendy stayed back at Valdebebas during the Club World Cup to continue his recovery, but there doesn’t seem to be any indication of a timely return.

Real Madrid did the right thing by signing more defenders

Madrid have signed four players this summer so far, three of whom are defenders, and I call that a very wise decision. Given the number of injuries suffered by centre-backs and full-backs over the past few seasons, these signings were absolutely necessary.

Ferland Mendy has been incredibly injury-prone, to the point that trusting him has become less feasible with time. Signing Alvaro Carreras at this point has proven to be a beneficial decision. Without him, Fran Garcia would have been the only option Madrid could rely on.

It’s time for Madrid to start seriously considering the departure of Ferland Mendy, even though he’s not ready to leave just yet. He still believes in his potential, and that’s admirable, but pragmatism tells a different story. There is little Mendy can do now to outperform Fran Garcia or Alvaro Carreras.

Mendy has had his moments. He singlehandedly saved Madrid from conceding a late goal in the 2022 Champions League game against Manchester City, and he deserves his flowers for that and much more. But I think it’s time to move on, both for the player and for the club.
