Marcelo

The first name on the list is that of the current club captain and the current longest-serving player at the club, Marcelo. It is one of the most obvious picks, with the 33-year old entering the final year of his contract.

The Brazilian is one of the biggest foreign legends at Real Madrid and he is in his 16th season as a Real Madrid player. He has become the club’s captain with Sergio Ramos leaving in the summer. But his captaincy is a result of his seniority and has nothing to do with his performances, which have been underwhelming since 2018. He was somewhat better in 2019/20, but he has found it difficult to maintain his fitness with recurring injuries.

His fitness levels have been so disappointing that he has been injured after just five minutes against Celta Vigo. The club wouldn’t have any interest in renewing his contract, considering his age and the numerous left-back options in Ferland Mendy, Miguel Gutierrez, David Alaba, and even Nacho Fernandez.

He was expected to leave the club this summer, but the numero doce of Real Madrid wanted to stay and fulfill his contract, with the club respecting their legend’s decision. A legend like Marcelo deserves all the respect from the board and the love from the fans, and he will only leave as a player who won everything at Real Madrid, with the fans bidding farewell to him in the Nuevo Santiago Bernabeu.
