Real Madrid are being linked to a superstar that they must not sign

Real Madrid know they have some objectives to fulfill in the summer transfer window. One big one – perhaps the biggest one – is completing the signing of Kylian Mbappe. But, he’s not the only player they need. The club has recognised they need a centre-back, and they need to realise they need a midfielder as well, judging by reports that signing Tchouameni is a priority for 2023.

But, according to David Ornstein, Real Madrid are one of the favourites to sign French superstar Paul Pogba. They are one of three clubs – the other two being Juventus and PSG – that are interested in his services.

Pogba is a great midfielder when he’s at his best, but I really, really don’t think this is a good idea.

Real Madrid will take a step back, not forward, if they end up signing Paul Pogba

Real Madrid have so many great young midfielders among their ranks already. And while it is true that they need some more reinforcements, I don’t think signing Paul Pogba is the way to go. As I said, Pogba at his best is a great player, but that also comes with a huge set of challenges.

First, Pogba is very, very inconsistent. You don’t know which version of him you’re going to get. I think it’s fair to judge that the Frenchman just hasn’t been consistent since he signed for Manchester United, and when things start going wrong, his performances don’t lift the team, either. He doesn’t have the mentality that the midfielders at Real Madrid share, and, to top it all off, he comes with his own set of antics.

Then there is another reason about him taking up minutes of players like Fede Valverde and Eduardo Camavinga. Even though Ancelotti has named Fede as an “untouchable” I think it is fair to assume that Pogba will start over him. We have seen how big of an impact these players have had this season, and although Pogba would come to Madrid with his own set of abilities, I think trusting these young players is the way to go.

Finally, I think that yes, Real Madrid do need a midfielder. They need a French midfielder. But that midfielder’s name is not Paul Pogba. It’s actually Aurelien Tchouameni, a player that is so far above the rest of his peers in his position, that it’s not even funny. He’s absolutely necessary for this club’s present and future, and signing Pogba would get in the way of that.

I think Pogba would be much better at a team like Juventus, where he found his superstardom in the first place. PSG is a lost cause, in my opinion, but I’m sure that for Madrid, Pogba just shouldn’t be an option.
