Real Madrid fans want the club to make a major investment in the middle of the park this summer, but the Merengues seem hesitant on opening up their pocketbooks. And that may be understandable in light of the wages and bonuses paid to free agents Kylian Mbappe and Antonio Rudiger as marquee incoming transfers.

However, Real Madrid have the opportunity to sign a world-class, young midfielder in Aurelien Tchouameni who can star at a hard-to-find position, Casemiro’s No. 6 role. Tchouameni is very much a fan of Madrid and wants to join the club. So why not try to sign the Monaco man?

According to a report from Fabrice Hawkins, Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti is indeed a fan of Tchouameni, but the Merengue coach wants to keep the midfielders on the team. He’s really talking about Dani Ceballos, who would have one year left on his contract and was a clear candidate for a transfer before recent breakout performances fully convinced Carletto.

Real Madrid would have to sell Dani Ceballos, at a minimum, to sign Tchouameni

Hawkins states that in order for Real Madrid to sign Tchouameni, the current stance is that they would have to sell a midfielder. A “major departure” would need to happen.

Does Ceballos count as a major departure? It would seem that Real will not keep Ceballos AND Tchouameni. But would selling Ceballos be sufficient to push Los Blancos to sign the Ligue 1 standout? Or would the unfounded Casemiro rumors have to come true in order for Real Madrid to sign his replacement in 2022?

Casemiro isn’t going anywhere, so if Tchouameni were to sign, he would have to be content with not playing every game. And that is difficult to ask from such a talented player. Yet, of course, Eduardo Camavinga has done the same for Madrid. One thing to remember with this comparison, though, is that Camavinga is a few years younger than Tchouameni.

At a minimum, it looks like Ceballos would have to be sold in order for Real Madrid to consider spending on Tchouameni. But even then, the deal may not happen. So much hinges on the pressure Tchouameni puts on Monaco to specifically go to Madrid, as well as how the bidders influence the asking price. A fee of 80 million euros seems unlikely, but that is indeed what the Ligue 1 side is aiming for.
