Real Madrid will have to wave goodbye to at least a handful of players in the summer 2022 transfer window, and the more players they can part ways with, the more likely it is for them to bring in more stars than just free agents Kylian Mbappe and Antonio Rudiger.

Los Blancos are expected to lose three players of their own to free agency, though they had made no real effort to keep any of them. Gareth Bale’s time at Real Madrid is obviously over, as confirmed by his agent. Isco is also set to leave. While he is effective, he has no real place in the Madrid squad and could do a lot better at a different club.

But the third man, Marcelo, is in an interesting position now. Whereas it once seemed like he had absolutely nothing to give to the club and needed to go, Marcelo has turned it around at left back in 2021/22. The Brazilian has proven useful at times, improving from a truly woeful 2020/21 in which he was Madrid’s worst player and cost the team the LaLiga title when Ferland Mendy went down with an injury.

Real Madrid met with Marcelo’s agent over a contract renewal

Sergio Quirante reports for El Golazo de Gol that Real Madrid met with Marcelo’s agent on Wednesday morning in an effort to keep the left back for another year. Real sign players above the age of 30 – Marcelo is currently 34 – on year-to-year deals. Luka Modric, for example, is expected to sign one of those shortly.

While it is true that Marcelo has improved this season, he should still leave Real Madrid. At 34, Marcelo is on his last legs. He has not been exposed this season, but that is more due to the opponents he faced and the situations he was in. The club legend is not good enough defensively, and his attacking quality is only buoyed by his technique; he has declined in every respect.

Marcelo has the perfect opportunity to leave the club with his head held high as a player without souring his legacy. He and Real Madrid should not risk that for one more year. And that is not even discussing his wages.

Real could use his spot on a young talent like Miguel Gutierrez or even Fran Garcia. Marcelo can stay in a front office or coaching capacity, but it is time for Real to move on from him as a player, regardless of how much Carlo Ancelotti and the Madrid fans respect him.
