The 21/22 season for Real Madrid is one for the history books, not just on account of the La Liga and Champions League titles, but also the collapse of the biggest transfer saga in football history. Real Madrid was set for the next decade, hoping that they’ll form the team’s attack around Kylian Mbappe, who left the club high and dry. It was a sour patch in what was a Cinnabon-like season for Los Blancos.
Prioritizing on Mbappe made Real lose out on Erling Haaland, and well, any other attacking option. The club went in with the all-or-nothing approach and ended up with nothing. Haaland ended up at Manchester City, and other prospects in Mane and Gnabry ended up at Bayern. From the looks of it, Los Blancos aren’t moving in on any other forward at the moment, while Asensio and Mariano are expected to stay this season.
Regardless, Real Madrid should unquestionably move for Erling Haaland in 2024. Let’s discuss why.
Mbappe will not be a Real Madrid player for as long as Florentino Perez serves the club
There are a lot of fans and even people associated with the club, who are hopeful of Mbappe ending up at Real sooner or later. I believe these people are underestimating Florentino’s ego. More importantly, his love for Real Madrid. Whether you want to accept it or not, Mbappe has disrespected Real Madrid, and Florentino will never forget that. Neither should any fan of this club.
If Mbappe is out of cards, Haaland should be the one leading Real Madrid’s attack for the next decade. We’re way past the stage where we undervalue a player of his calibre simply because he’s performing in an easier league. He’s in the Premier League for at least the next two seasons and he’ll do what he has been doing so far in the Bundesliga.
He’s got all the potential to be the best player in the world, which makes him an automatic target for Real Madrid. There’s always a Galactico in Madrid’s frontline, and it should be Haaland in the long run.
Real Madrid desperately needs a number nine
We’ve seen time and again, that Real can’t function without a number 9. We saw it in El Clasico last season and we’re seeing it in the preseason. False nine never works for the team, and if it did, Eden Hazard’s time at Real Madrid would have been much better. The lack of reliable backups in Mariano and Jovic has made Karim Benzema a glue that holds the team together.
Benzema has been so good that everyone seems to forget that he’s 34, and nearing the end of his contract. There’s a good chance that he’ll renew for a season or two, but what then? Haaland is the only number nine in the world who can replace Karim Benzema. According to a report from AS, Real Madrid thinks so too. Real Madrid will look to sign Erling Haaland from Manchester City in 2024 when his €150m release clause is active and when Karim Benzema’s new contract will run out, says the report.

150 million is a massive number, but Haaland is worth every penny. A release clause is contingent upon several factors, mainly the player’s intention to leave. Regardless, not going after him when the clause becomes active would be a big mistake, and hopefully, Real Madrid doesn’t miss out on the opportunity.
