Despite winning his own 2024 Ballon d'Or award, Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti was quick to mention Vinicius Junior in his acceptance.
It has not been a great week for Real Madrid. Not only were they humbled in El Clasico to arch rivals Barcelona, but Vinicius Junior was also robbed of his deserved 2024 Ballon d'Or award.
With no disrespect to the eventual winner Rodri, it seemed set in stone for Vinicius Junior to win the award. In fact, this is the reason why so much of the discourse is around second-placed Vini, rather than first-placed Rodri.
Despite no Real Madrid representative being at the award, they did win a few awards. They were granted the best squad award, as well as Carlo Ancelotti being named the best manager.
Carlo Ancelotti wins Ballon d’Or award, but addresses Vinicius Junior
In his acceptance statement, posted to X (formerly Twitter), Carlo Ancelotti thanked his family, Florentino Perez, Real Madrid, Vinicius Junior and Dani Carvajal.
In his own words, Carlo Ancelotti said: "I want to thank my Family, my President, my Club, my Players and above all Vini and Carvajal."
Naturally, it is the last clause which many people are paying attention to. Vinicius Junior was the hottest topic of the Ballon d'Or awards, so for Ancelotti to thank him "above all" is quite telling of his thoughts.
Carlo Ancelotti is a very supportive manager. He is also not egotistical, which is shown by his recognition of those around him, whether they be above or below him in the Real Madrid pecking order.
The Italian coach has worked with some of the best players in the history of the game. Himself, he is one of the best managers of all-time. Therefore, he knows a thing or two about what it takes to spot great talent.
At Real Madrid, the feeling right now is clear. The Ballon d'Or is becoming less and less meaningful as the seasons go on. Individual honours have always meant less than team honours, anyway.
Real Madrid fans and players know who the best player in the world is. Vinicius Junior carries the weight of enough team honours, which he rightfully earned, anyway.
