It still feels weird to type this: Dani Carvajal is no longer a Real Madrid player. He has played his last game for the club, and after 23 years, is no longer affiliated with Real Madrid - at least, not on a professional level.
It is obviously a loss for Real Madrid in many capacities. They lose out on one of their most important players of the last decade. They lose a player who has seen four different eras as a Real Madrid player. They also lose out on someone who knows the club well from within, and those sorts of things are very difficult to replace.
However, it is happening, and Real Madrid fans are now wondering where he would go next. Carvajal is still a capable player - he did not show many signs of slowing down as a player in the minutes he got this season.
So, it is obvious that he wants to keep playing. He confirmed it in a recent interview, as well, but it was difficult to see what club exactly he would go for. There were many reports about interest from Saudi Arabia, Qatar, MLS, but Carvajal did not confirm any of them.
Dani Carvajal could open a door Real Madrid fans thought would stay shut
However, one thing that he said has caused a bit of a discussion on Real Madrid Twitter, and that is when he never truly discounted playing for another Spanish team.
He said: “Now I'll enjoy the summer a bit, but I'll keep playing, that's clear and definite for me. We'll see what the best options are for me and my family, and based on that, I'll make the decision.”
On whether he would want to stay in Spain, he said: “I don't know, we'll decide that calmly.”
On Como or Qatar, he said: "I don't know, I really don't know. Right now, I'm open to all options and we're working on it.”
He said he does not know whether he would play for any other Spanish team. Real Madrid fans would hope he would not. Also, there have been reports in the past about him choosing not to play in Spain out of respect for Spain.
Obviously, nothing against the guy if he wants to continue in Spain. Carvajal has lived in Spain all but one year of his life, and he might want to continue living there. However, it would be a bit difficult for Real Madrid fans to watch him play for a different Spanish club.
The chances of that happening may be slightly less than other teams, but if Carvajal has not ruled it out, you shouldn't, either.
