Jurgen Klopp could yet arrive as Real Madrid's new manager in the summer after his agent refuted claims that he is in talks with Atletico Madrid. The German is currently working as Red Bull's Head of Global Soccer but rumors are growing over a possible return to management.
The former Liverpool boss was positioned as the favorite for the job as soon as Xabi Alonso departed the Santiago Bernabeu in January. He quickly downplayed the possibility of becoming Alonso's permanent replacement.
Reports in Germany insisted that Klopp was open to taking over at the Bernabeu despite his comments. There has been recent talk of the 58-year-old being at odds with Red Bull executives and desiring a return to coaching.
Jurgen Klopp's agent denies Atletico Madrid rumor
Atletico Madrid looked like a possible destination for Klopp when reports claimed that he was holding talks with the Spanish giants. The idea of the German replacing Diego Simeone would have been a nightmare for Florentino Perez who is a massive fan.
Klopp's agent has now rubbished "stupid speculation" linking his client with the Atleti job. Marc Kosicke said (via Yalla Shoot):
"These are just silly rumors with no basis in truth."
Klopp left his role as Liverpool manager at the end of the 2023-24 season. He was a massive success with the English club, transforming them into one of Europe's top teams during a nine year reign.
That included guiding the Merseysiders to the Premier League title and the Champions League. He is adored by the club's fans because of his personality and exciting brand of football.
Real Madrid still have hope
Klopp's agent ruled out the German tactician replacing Simeone at Atleti. But he didn't comment on suggestions that Real are still in with a chance of appointing the former Borussia Dortmund coach.
If he were to leave his role with Red Bull and eye a return to management he could desire the Bernabeu. He has yet to coach in Spain and might like the idea of rivalling compatriot Hansi Flick in El Clasico.
Klopp will want control to take the job and that includes recruitment as he wants to build a team in his image. He was given free rein to do so during his time at Liverpool, overseeing Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane's arrivals at Anfield.
Madrid are expected to appoint a permanent manager at the end of the season and move on from caretaker manager Alvaro Arbeloa. Klopp ticks all the boxes but it looks likely to be a difficult pursuit.
