Real Madrid clinched a 1–0 victory away against Benfica in the first leg of the Champions League playoff, courtesy of an incredible goal by Vinicius Junior. Unfortunately, what should have been the Brazilian’s night was overshadowed by unwarranted racist comments from Gianluca Prestianni towards Vini.

All of the Real players, along with the fans and pundits, have come out in support of the Brazil star and rightly so, as that kind of behaviour has no place in modern-day football. Partcularly Kylian Mbappe and Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Real Madrid duo praised for supporting Vinicus

Legendary former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has come forward and lauded two Real stars for ‘backing’ Vini in the racism row. The English centre-back took to X to voice his opinion.

"Vini Jr is to blame, he shouldn't celebrate like this... What am I hearing ? That can't be coming out of peoples mouths surely! Shout out to Mbappe + Trent for backing their teammate!"

This comes after Kylian Mbappe and Trent-Alexander Arnold separately spoke about the matter in a post-match interview and stood by their teammate Vini. The French centre-forward said, "Prestianni should not come to the Bernabéu. He doesn't deserve to play in the best stadium in the world."

While the English right-back said: "It's ruined the night. It's a disgrace to the sport, it's a disgrace in society as well."

What’s the way forward from here?

Surprisingly enough, current Benfica manager Jose Mourinho had the audacity to blame Vini for celebrating and, to some extent, tried to defend the racism directed at him. Following this the Portuguese tactician, who also served as Real’s manager, has certainly lost the respect of a large number of Real fans.

Meanwhile, UEFA has already launched an investigation into the incident, which is a welcome step. They will have to make sure that Prestianni does not go unpunished. Moreover, a framework for strong action against this kind of abuse must be put in place in addition to giving referees power to act on such situations as soon as possible.

Anyway, on a happier note, it seems like Vinicius is back in form and has shown glimpses of his old self recently. The Brazilian was and still is a Real player through and through. He has already given Real fans a lot to cheer about over the years. And these are the times for the fans to return the favour. Just never stop dancing, Vini.
