Real Madrid are through to the quarter-finals of the Champions League after a convincing 5–1 win on aggregate against Manchester City. Alvaro Arbeloa seems to have finally figured things out and has successfully implemented his tactical vision on the squad.
While the Real team looks to build upon this momentum, the board will be busy shortlisting reinforcements for the summer transfer window. In the meantime, one of their key targets, Kees Smit, has given a big hint about joining the Merengues.
While speaking to Supergaande via Mundo Deportivo, the 20-year-old midfielder was recently asked where he would like to be in four years, to which he replied, “LaLiga”.”Playing there would be great. I love the sun, I'm tired of playing with so much cold and rain, so I would like to go play in Spain,"
Real have been linked with Kees for a long time now. So this new development would certainly get the fans buzzing, as they would love to see Smit in the Royal Whites jersey.
Things Real Madrid need to consider before signing Kees Smit
Smit is reportedly valued at around €60 million by AZ Alkmaar. Additionally, interest from other top clubs like Manchester United, Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea and Newcastle United, among others, could drive his price further.
There’s little doubt about the quality the Dutch international possesses, with 39 appearances in all competitions for his club, along with four goals and eight assists so far this season.
That said, Real will have to think carefully before proceeding with any deal involving a significant fee. They have made somewhat similar mistakes in the past, signing unproven talents who have fizzled out upon arriving in La Liga.
Alternative midfield options other than Kees Smit
Apart from Smit, Real have also been linked with a host of other alternatives like Vitinha, Rodri, and Enzo Fernandez, to name a few. Each of the above-mentioned players already has top-flight experience under their belts, which makes them better options for Los Blancos overall.
However, neither of them would come cheap for Real. With reinforcements needed in multiple areas on the pitch, the club might refrain from spending too much on a single signing.
Nevertheless, the summer transfer window is still about three months away, so there is plenty of time for Real to explore their options and plan their strategies accordingly.
