Real Madrid needs to strengthen their midfield, and there is an obvious solution; Chelsea's Enzo Fernandez is desperate to join the club.
Whilst on international duty with Argentina, Fernandez spoke of his admiration for Spain, Madrid, and what it would be like living there. He also refused to commit his future to Chelsea, and then went on to praise some of Real Madrid's legends, including Toni Kroos and Luka Modric.
Modric is one player that Real Madrid may be regretting letting go of last summer. The experienced midfielder went on to join AC Milan and is still performing in Serie A. The Croat is now 40, so Los Blancos need to freshen up their lineup with younger players.
As Fernandez is only 25, he would appear to be the long-term successor to Modric. Especially, as he is obviously desperate to join Real Madrid. His recent comments led to him being suspended by Chelsea for two games.
A transfer to Real Madrid could be on the cards for Enzo Fernandez
This is not what the Blues want their captain speaking in this way. However, Fernandez is obviously frustrated at how Chelsea's season has unraveled. They went into the campaign on the back of winning the Club World Cup. However, they are now sixth in the Premier League and have lost their last three games in the division.
The Club World Cup and the Europa Conference League are the only two trophies he has won since he arrived at Stamford Bridge in 2023. A player of his talents who won the World Cup with Argentina the year before he joined Chelsea will be desperate for more silverware.
Real Madrid have not had the best of seasons either; they currently trail Barcelona by nine points in La Liga. Also, they trail Bayern Munich 2-1 in their Champions League quarter-final tie after the first leg, which was at the Bernabeu. They now have the difficult task of turning the scoreline around away from home.
Fernandez could be a great addition to Real Madrid's roster. He is predominantly a central midfielder but can also play in an attacking role and on the left. He has scored 12 goals with six assists in 46 games in all competitions for Chelsea this season.
Los Blancos already have a stacked central-midfield as they have the likes of Federico Valverde, Aurélien Tchouaméni, and Eduardo Camavinga, whilst they have Jude Bellingham in an attacking role. However, after a disappointing campaign, a freshening up of their lineup will be needed.
